hmmm just remembered! I will have won Euromillions by time this comes round so if U see a Chinook landing it wil be me an my bike, car et al......the milky bars are on me!!
I've got a suggestion of a route to the ferry for anyone travelling from the south.
Junc 12 M74 (A70 Ayr) turn left > A70 Douglas > Muirkirk > Look out for right fork to Sorn B743 > Sorn > At traffic lights in Mauchline turn right > A76 Kilmarnock > At roundabout at Kilmarnock, straight across A71 Irvine > Take A78 Ardrossan/Largs at roundabout > Just before Ardrossan there is a Morrisons set back on the left if you need anything. Follow the ferry signs.
The section from the M74 to Mauchline is a good biking road and normally quite. The rest of it is unavoidable busy dual carriage way etc.
Just a suggestion. Dean
Has anybody ridden the route that Dean-o suggests from J12 of the A74 to Ayr recently?? Last time I drove along there the road surface was appalling...never seen such big potholes. Hope it's been resurfaced and if not take care chums. Bobkat should know I guess
I was planning to overnight somewhere in the lakes to get an easy start on the friday, then... turn off at Gretna - A75 to Dumfries then A76 to Kilmarnock... mainly 'cos I'll have had enough of M-ways by then. Seems all right on the map, but, not such a good idea?
Me and Sara & Laura will be travelling across country on the A75 and A76...but that's cos me and Sara are learners on 125s and can't go on the motorway. That's definitely the more scenic route I think, going through Galloway
I was seeing someone in Kilwinning for 2yrs, and I was going up every fortnight. Eventually just gave in and took the easiest option, off at J8 and took the A71 straight over. That's the easiest option for motorway miles, and shortest cross-country pothole-a-thon
Well.... living in Devon gives you amazing pot-hole reaction speed, so reckon Galloway route will do for me then Plus, it's not like I go to Scottyland very often, so best see as much as poss
A75 / A76 is a good route the roads interesting enough....all Scottish roads are full of potholes reckon they are cutting back on road maintenance....noticed it last summer.
A75/A76 is a very enjoyable route , great scenery for the cruisers(low down bums) and great twisty bits for the rocketiers (bum above wrists) BUT it is a road much used by wagons (40 mph) and often has rolling queues of frustrated car drivers , nuff said.
For the 'L' platers among you . The A74 carlisle to Gretna no longer exists , it is now motorway.
I would suggest that in carlisle follow signs for A7 north , ride across jn 44 and head for Longtown. Longtown is a straight road with a couple of sets of lights. Through the village the road bends left across a river/ bridge , 2or300 meters later turn left on a bend for Gretna. Follow the road and you will cross the motorway into Gretna . From gretna follow A75 Dumfries ..... See ya there ... Dusty
Minnie's right, the A70 has a poor surface. I drove along it last week. The reason I suggested it, is that it is scenic, plenty of bends and quiet. Also the motorway from Gretna to J12 is good. (if that's possible)
The A76 from Dumfries is also a good route but it could be very busy on Good Friday. I would say it's definitely the best route for L drivers and those who are suffering from motorway over dose.
