OK, hypothetical question... if we go back to the original premis of what brought many of us to this site originally i.e. dating. Let's imagine we 'consider' we've made a connection with someone special....then we look at the karma of the 'special' someone and it's risen by 20% over the last week!....bearing in mind our beloved doesn't appear to be posting in forums, nipping in the chat room at regular intervals, or adding name to bucket loads of events surely this is valuable information about the activities of the certain someone special Lol...honestly I'm not cynical or anything, but tis quite useful to have access to this useful little snippet of info in my opinion Karma??? mmmm indeed lol

This guy is the most 'popular' guy on the site, yet he is lying thru his teeth! Matt, you cannot allow this ludicrous situation to continue

i see what youre saying minnie, but wouldnt base my opinion on someone "special" on anything "virtual"!!
plus, if it is simply the top 20 thats done away with, you can still see virtual karma percentage should you so wish, so can still have access to the snippet of info!

Boss Mom: I hate the whole karma thing too, but it was in place when we all signed up along with a lot of other rules so c'est la vie. The Karma rating didn't exist when I joined I contribute a little on a regular basis to the site and I'm not not on the top 20 list, but I don't want to be there anyway, so being active on the site doesn't neccessarily mean you get a high karma rating, as it's based on a number of things not just posting in the forums. Matt did say to me, on the forum, some time ago, that he put me on the top 20 list. He said that after I asked how come my habits hadn't altered yet where I once was top of the list I was now lower down. I was just curious, then I was furious that he had massaged the ratings.

I personally think that this is being blown out of all proportion. Just because someones Karma rating is high or low or whatever is not necessarily indicative of someones ulterior motives but it can help people to determine certain things.Somebody mentioned a Top 20 guy that always puts his name to Events but never turns up, that's pretty obvious then what his motive is, to advertise himself and hopefully get lots of PM's from women. Some people have a low Karma simply because, maybe, they are reserved people that find it difficult to relate to others, they may find that this site is cliquey and find it hard to get into that clique.Of course it doesn't necessarily instill trust but at least if someone has some rating it tells you that that person has some activity on the site and may be known by others for either good or ill, so at least it gives you the opportunity of doing some groundwork if need be. For those that seek to boost their Karma for egotistical purposes then that can only be described as pretty sad really.Karma should never be taken as representing a persons character, if you do that then that is surely foolish, to think that just because someone has a high Karma they are trustworthy is mad, or a low one, that they aren't worth bothering with.I don't take much notice of Karma really so i can't see why it's such a big issue?

interesting point from sandi re massaging of ratings, as peoples points altered dramatically after the KISS rally, and matts response was along the lines of "what have i done"! ergo, it would appear to be based, at times, upon a whim rather than formulae! no top 20 would mean that the alleged benefits of virtual karma remain, but without the negatives, so is a no lose solution for people of all viewpoints!

I guess the only question left then is does anyone want to be on the Top 20 or can they list any positive reasons for it being there. I spend hours on here both moderating, posting in forums, posting events and putting myself down for events and send numerous PMs every day but I have no interest in being on a Top 20.

If karma points can be massaged then why not simply remove said individuals 100%. then everyone can stop goin on about it and get back to the fun that this site normally brings. If these people want to look good then that's fine, only time will bring out the true person behind the false karma. As for the true meaning of karma: what comes around and all that. And if anyone is so sad as to mainly base an individuals personality on karma, they are either really naive or sad.

Many western cultures have a notion of karma, as demonstrated in the phrase what goes around comes around. The concepts of reaping what you sow from Galatians 6:7, violence begets violence and live by the sword, die by the sword are Christian expressions similar to karma. Some observers[who?] have compared the action of karma to Western notions of sin and judgment by God or gods, while others understand karma as an inherent principle of the universe without the intervention of any supernatural being. In Hinduism, God does play a role and is seen as a dispenser of karma.
