Do you think it is true that people only believe what they want to believe? Or do they just try to convince others of their beliefs regardless of whether they actually believe it themselves?
I would say that most people want to fit into a tribal unit, or the modern version of that, so they will tailor their beliefs to that of the group they wish to fit in with. When trying to convince others, they're either testing the waters to see if you do or don't fit in with their group or they're trying to include you therein. Politicians, clergy, etc. are just placating you with meaningless promises and other assorted drivel so you will hand them power. Personally, I say what I mean if I think you can take the truth as I see it. If you just won't listen, I don't waste the energy. I don't ram my views down peoples throats, well... unless you're really annoying. Mwhahaha
TigerTim missed his cue, but hey it was a long shot ..
You're welcome davidneale.. I see your reasoning (although you and the rest of you lovely debaters need to accept some responsibility for stoking the fire with your thought provoking prompts)..
Good on the Judge.. (was the judge a woman?.. apologies if I've overlooked that particular, yet minor detail ) ..
I'm with you there hurtz.. You can't beat a bit of enlightenment
I'd say there's a bit of both in the Bad Penny alias.. It was never meant in a critical sense, nor was it taken as such.. There's always good with the bad.. 'If you've faith that will always be something positive that comes out of a negative, you'll be able to find it' .. Thank you mad munky..
Great post Jerry.. I think we should have you running for Parliament.. Real and true.. Just think of the House of Lords full of BM's.. and hey when you really get your foot in the door, you can hire it out as a venue..
That's deeep
I've often contemplated the vastness of space/universe
Always get lost in the Magellan cloud
I have a "feeling" that the whole thing is not only circular
But multi-dimensional too
Constantly returning and crossing/re-tracing earlier steps/paths
With collisions and beginings and endings
But are they all random ?
Or is it all following an unfathomable mathematical formula ?
Until the whole thing just becomes a tangle
Of recurring scenarios subtly changed by the influence of the ravages of time
But then what would I know, about such GRAND things
I'm just an old gadgy with a vivid imagination
But what if ...... I'm a BIT right .................. ???????????????
We all try to put things into packages in such a way that we can visualize or quantify. I think with space that we have to forget our normal thinking.
We all know space is a vacuum which has objects suspended in it. A vacuum consist of nothing. We don't actually know how many objects there are in the universe and will probably never know. As humans we need to stop trying to quantify and except that there is no reason why nothingness can't go on forever.
Good job you only exposed yourself to it for 30 secs Tim
Any more than that and your brain would have gone into "hibernation" mode
Can nothingness BE something or anything ?
If you accept that the universe is expanding and has been since "the big bang" and that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, then the edge of the universe would be extremely colourful. The rest of the universe would have stars/plasma/energy radiating light in pretty much every direction throughout time and history, so... any random point within it would contain at least one photon of light so true "nothingness" is therefore impossible.

If you accept that the universe is expanding and has been since "the big bang".
This surely refers to the matter whether that be solid, light or other. But the question is, if the universe is still expanding. What space is it gradually occupying? Surely it can only expand into the region of nothingness. Otherwise what was there before? If there was already something there, then surely this was already part of the universe.
Have you ever laid on your back on a clear night and gazed up into the sky? (alcoholic inebriation experiences excluded)
The universe is the matter, the energy and the gaps between it all. You're thinking of the balloon theory, that the universe as we know it is contained in a (rather large) balloon [easiest analogy] and that it must have room to expand into, right? But, every thing there is, including All space and time is contained in the balloon. There is no anything outside of it. There was nothing there before the big bang because that would have needed time to exist in, which hadn't happened yet.
It's laying back on a clear night and pondering these ideas that made humans imagine the concept of Gods, 'cos that idea makes your head hurt way way less than the big bang theory
Mysterious indeed Penny
I'm sure you're right about everyone having their own thoughts
But what do YOU think ?
Are we hurtling through space/time at the speed of light ?
Or are we in a Geo-stationary orbit within the whole universe ?
Interesting speculation Jerry, about the Gods
