Sandi, see your local Citizens Advice Bureau for advice as I know there are discretionary benefits for housing benefit (for example) which you can apply for which will cover some of your rent if you cannot pay it all. Top two things to sort out when you are in financial diffs is first the roof over your head then your food, then worry about the bills. Yes easier said than done and I can come across rightly like a smug know-it-all .... but I been there a couple times in my life and really do know what its like to starve unfortunately.... I was in that position myself (several years back now) of having to leave work due to stress (well stress is a bit light a description for what I went through but suffice to say I was depressed...) and I too was living on 25 quid a week for almost 6 months but fought/appealed the DSS decision (or the DWP whatever they called now) with help of CAB and due to the stress as verified by my doctor, I was eventually able to get a lot of my benefits back-dated so could pay any bills which had built up. Please see CAB about this they are wonderful in helping you sort it out plus they will speak to creditors etc for you and the best thing is their advice is free. Good luck

Sandi my heart goes out to you, the austerity measures being dished out by this government will get harder and harder. Yes there are some people and always will be people who abuse the system but they are a small minority. Wether we like it or not the NHS and the Welfare state is there to help the less fortunate in society and I and thankfully a lot of others in work don't mind paying in to help the less fortunate, let's face it who knows when any of us might be in a position when we can't work through illness or disability.
The bankers should be made to pay for the financial deficit we are in let's face it they caused it not the unemployed and disabled people of this country. The country have to visit food banks while the rich continue to get richer on the backs of the poor. Like Lulu said go see your local CAB. Good luck

i have to say jp that i do agree with you on some points.i get fed up of dole scroungers who go out have loads of kids, demand a house and benefits etc then spend it on drugs, fags and booze.we have a lot like that round here.i work my ass off too only to fund these scum.but i do also understand that there are people on the dole who do try really hard to get a job.guzzi lady is one example she constantly applies for jobs but gets turned down.thankfully for her she now is working.i myself have been there and would do anything to be in work like stacking shelves in a supermarket, sweeping the streets in fact not much i would say no to.but yes there are many who abuse the system and it needs to be stopped!!! its unfair on those who are genuine!

maybe so kay but nowhere in that sentence does it say everyone does it.i know there are lots of people on the dole who dont want to be there but there are loads more who wont get a job because they get more money being on the dole and am sorry but in my book that makes them a dole scrounger.the estate i lived on when i was a teenager was full of lazy bitches who got themselves up the duff so they could get a house and loads of benefits.one girl had four kids by the time she was 18 its a bloody joke!!! yet my step mum who was seriously disabled could get nothing pathetic!!!!!

There is an awful lot of Polish people that don't seem to find it that difficult to find a job in this country .
The main problem with the home grown unemployed seems to be that they would loose money by having a job .
Just think about this for a second or two.
The tight @rsed Tory government give people more benefit money than an employer is willing to pay.

Indeed, a couple on the minimum wage are still entitled to social security benefits.
In other words . The employer does not pay a living wage.
The government feels the need to top up their pay with money from our income tax .
It is the employer that is better off . Not the employee .
The 'living wage' should come from the employer. Not from my pockets .
It is all just a scam to give money to the rich .

Make the minimum wage £12.00 per hour and do away with tne dole.
The govt wouldn't need as much company tax coz they would have loads more income tax lol. Not that many companies pay tax lol
Just remember . The benefit system allows the rich to keep more of the company profits .
It is tne rich that are the real benefits scroungers.
Scum.
Dusty Marx lol xx

My immediate neighbours are Polish and nicer people you couldn't ask for as neighbours. Both work full time and the house they live in is like a palace inside, all paid for by their own toil. There is ample work out there, although as dusty said not well paid, but there is a generation of work shy individuals who think because they were born here they are entitled to live the life of Riley without having to break into a sweat, unless it is to run to the bookies or the pub. Since I left school in ྊ I have spent a total of 6 weeks claiming dole, apart from that I have always worked.
I am in no way casting aspertions on those unable to work because of health issues, but if the poles can find work,(car washing) then anyone can.

Dusty do you really think that if employers had to pay a min wage of £12.00 an hour the goverment would be happy err no they would just put the tax up on everything

I seem to remember someone on here who injured his shoulder last year through a simple bike accident, and as a result was off work for several months. I'm sure that during that time he found how difficult it was to live on sick pay/benefits, and was glad to eventually recover his fitness in order to get back to work. He was a very lucky man..... but not a very understanding one it seems - or perhaps one with a very short memory.

Unfortunately, there are many people who cannot work at all due to terrible health conditions, and I'd like to think that, as a compassionate nation, we are happy to look after them via taxes, voluntary work, whatever it takes, for as long as it takes in order that they live as good a quality of life as possible.

There are also people who WANT to work, DESPERATELY, who have dreadful health conditions, conditions often invisible to the person in the street, but who, with support, both practical and financial CAN contribute to the workplace. However, the working conditions, both in management and on the shop floor have to be positive in order for this to happen, and for it to succeed.

If that person is lucky and finds employment - whether it's 2, 20, or 35 hours per week - with a supportive employer who believes that a person with a disabling condition can still contribute to the workplace, because they have the required valuable skills and are the best person for the job, then they can work, albeit with adjustments to say the hours they do, or the importance of special furniture/ tools etc in order for them to carry out that work to the best of their ability.

But if they find their selves unlucky enough to take on a job which they desperately want, need, and know they can do with support, support which isn't delivered from the management, and in doing that job find themselves becoming ill through the stress and worry of wanting to do it right and find theirselves failing BECAUSE of that lack of support, this will practically always lead to that persons health and the conditions it deals with, breaking down again.

Can we please not lump these decent, work focused, ethical people together with all the drug takers, alcohol swiggers, single mums, and generally feckless people who don't want to, or may through their habits be completely unemployable , that seem to have become the focus on here, as that is a completely different subject to the one Sandi posted on here about.

We are all one step away from becoming unemployed, injured or ill - or all three - and having our lives changed from us being in control of it, to it being in control of us.

Sandi, what that manager did was so wrong on so many levels.
There are steps you could take to deal with him, but only when you're ready. Take your time and Good luck with it all.x.

Hey Sandi , one of my mates , and his wife , are career dolies . They suggested that you should have gone on tne sick rather than just leave. Not much use now I know.
Good luck for your future Dusty xx
p.s. A bit of humor goes a long way so,,, Spend some of jp's tax money on a roll of 'bum wipe' so you can think of him at the appropriate time lol .
I don't think jp will begrudge you a smile as well as the benefits.x

Sandi go to the doctors and tell him/her you're depressed then take the sick note to social they'll have to pay you sickness benefit.
that's what I did several years ago when I was a driver and lost my licence and job. social said they would not pay me unemplyment benefit because I left my job voluntarly.

My friends daughter is 30 and has never worked. If it looks like she might have to get a job she pops another scrote kid out,now has six!
A crap job beats no job hands down.
I was made redundant in august and was lucky enough to get a job within a week (£500 a month lower take home though!)
I'm with JP on this one.
As to stress in work all jobs have it somewhere,a crap job beats no job.
