In 1863, David Lloyd George was born - future Prime Minister and social reformer who introduced old-age pensions and then health and unemployment insurance. Nice while they lasted eh?

In 1986 Britain and France reached agreement on the Channel Tunnel, promising that trains would run by 1993. When it eventually open in May 1994 it was with debts of £925m. But perhaps some of our birthday boys and girls are happy it's there for a quick blast to the continent.
in 2008 the world's stock markets were in turmoil. Tagged Black Monday, the FTSE-100 suffered it's biggest ever one day fall and Asian markets lost up to 14%. Funny how things go around and come around.
Sharing a birthday with Benny Hill, born in 1925 are:
in 1920 Alf Ramsay was born. He grew up to manage England to their 1966 World Cup win and received a knighthood in recognition of it the following year.
Wonder who among his birthday sharers would win some kind of award, and what for? Happy birthday to all you would-be, could-be, may be(?), Knights and Dames:
In 2016 I very nearly didn't do the birthdays in time!
Meanwhile, back in 1989 legislation was passed to allow petrol stations to display fuel prices by the litre. We soon git used to the same numbers per litre as we'd paid per gallon, but thankfully it's a bit cheaper these days.
Hopefully that will allow our birthday boys and girls ti ride further and more often. Happy birthday to you all:
in 1901 Edward Turner was born. Edward was a motorcycle designer whose 4 cylinder engine design was rejected by BSA and subsequently sold to Aerial motorcycles - the legendary Ariel Square Four.
Of course you don't need to design engines to appreciate riding them, as I'm sure our birthday friends will testify. Happy birthday to you all:
my one and only chance to do birthdays today (phew)
in 1759 Robert (Rabbie) Burns was born and on this day for decades, maybe even centuries, Scots around the globe have spouted archaic verse and stabbed poor wee haggis puddin's wi daggers. If you've never experienced any of these things you've missed out, get yersels to Scottyland next year!
an even more traditional "happy birthday to you" greeting we still recite to everyone still alive and celebrating today. in 1841 Hong Kong was proclaimed British sovereign territory
in 1908 the first Scout group ever, The 1st Glasgow Boy Scout, was registered
I wonder how many of our birthday boys were once boy scouts, and if any of them still behave like one! Happy birthday all the same to everyone celebrating today:
in 1606 the trail for treason of Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators began. I thought he'd have had pretty summary justice doled out to him back then, goes to show how ill-informed I am. Learning a lot here, lol.
Let all light sparklers for the birthday crew: alexpiet, coknyred, dario365, Draco, Fairdinkum, fifer, firestorm1961, fjryorkie, gilly, gimp, GrmMrhd1, guffalo, Huwi675, ian36532, Irishness, jenno1, johnro, leedslad2503, MarkyMarkUK8, Nev-spark, paradox74, rich69, supermotofool, Tallrider7
in 1896 the first British motoring fine was issued. Walter Arnold was fined a pricely 1 shilling for exceeding the 2 mph limit in a built-up area. He passed the house of the local policeman doing 8 mph (how they judged the speed I don't know), the constable gave chase on his bicycle and after a 5 mile chase arrested him. There's no mention of points and I assume there weren't even driving licences back then.
Of course you lot will all have sparkly, clean licences, won't you? Happy birthday to you all:
well that's another day that's fair run away with me!
in 1856 Queen Victoria the Victoria Cross as the highest military decoration for outstanding bravery on the field of battle. Originally cast from cannon captured at Sevastopol until the supply ran out in 1942.
They might not have medals, but there might be a few 'Birthday Boy' or 'Birthday Girl' badges pinned on folk today. Congratulations to you all:
in 1983 it became compulsory to wear seat belts in cars in Britain. Lots of other rules have followed in the years since but the roads are no safer because they keep getting busier.
in 1940 David John White was born - better known to you and me as Sir David Jason or Granville, Pop Larkin, Del Boy, Jack Frost - all of whom we are still enjoying on the gogglebox.
