Keep practicing the theory and get hold of an up to date Highway Code and the Theory book for riders. Click through to Amazon from the site by clicking on the "Our Shop" button :o)
You can get away with it for the CBT, but you need to read up on it before taking your theory test.
Well done Rachel , get up an go for it lass
Hope the weather holds out for you on Wednsday .
Just keep telling yourself , "I can do this" "I really can do this"
Thanks guys!
Not feeling too bad at the moment, no real nerves yet. Bet that changes once I'm there and my knees turn to jelly!
I am looking forward to it though.
I wasn't competent enough to do the 2 hour road ride.
I really struggled with the controls, bringing everything together in the right order at the right time. Kept losing my balance when stopping but managed to not drop the bike. I was ok at higher speeds (the heady heights of about 20mph on the housing estate) and the gear changes between 2nd and 3rd and back down to 2nd but couldn't master stopping in a safe and controlled fashion. Setting off wasn't too bad, that improved a lot.
I'm feeling a bit low, I'm disappointed that I haven't managed it and worried about the additional expense now involved in going back. At this moment in time, I don't think I have the ability to do a course, and certainly not a DAS one, I couldn't manage the weight of the bike.
I did enjoy it though and if I can get the stop and start licked, I think I'll be ok.
Hey Rachel.. I was like that, read the original post i put on.
I really dint think i wud ever master the clutch/throttle...even tho ive been a driving over 20yrs.. its just different on a bike.
But don't be disheartened, theres many of us who couldn't master it all in one day, a few have said so on here too.
When i went back, 3weeks later, i was feelin crappy..dint wanna do it.. dint think i was ever gonna do it... dint fink i wud mek a biker.
But i had already paid for my CBT and this 2nd day was at no extra cost, so i fort sod it... im gonna give it a 2nd go.
After having a few more practices on the car park, it was time to get out on the road.
My instructor said if i dint feel ok after 20 mins, we would come back in.
He made me lead..and i lost the others straight away.. i pulled out, and they dint..lol
But i pulled into a car park and waited for them..then rejoined and was instructed to go back up front.
I loved it !! absolutely loved it!! and I was like u, dint get past 3rd gear int car park, but out ont road went up the gears wivout even thinkin abart it !
Basically...keep at it Rachel.. u will be fine!
Seriously - it's a lot to take in and this is a completely new experience for you. It takes a while to get the hang of stopping and starting - anyone who tells you different is either lying or somehow a born natural!
As for additional expense of going back - unless it's changed since August - they are NOT allowed to charge you for further tuition. They can charge you for bike hire/insurance but that shouldn't be any more than about £30-£40.
When you go back - not if - WHEN... It will suddenly fall into place for you and you'll wonder why you struggled a bit today! lol
As for DAS courses, yeah, they have their place, but I honestly believe you'll end up a more rounded rider with the practice and experience gained from riding a 125 for a while first. DAS teaches you to ride and to get you through the test - it doesn't give you the experience which is ultimately what really counts in making anyone a good rider.
I've chosen to go the 125 route because I actually believe I'll be put off if I do DAS. Yes, I'll end up with an expensive licence much quicker, but I'll be punching above my weight as far as I'm concerned.
When I learned to drive, I didn't get behind the wheel of a sports car... same theory applies IMO.
When I did mine, I elected not to do the road section on day 1 as I declared myself not yet competent... The instructor was willing to allow me out on the roads, but I felt I'd be a liability to myself, him and the other lad on the course as I'd only be concentrating on whether my hands/feet were doing the right thing.
As it turned out - the young lad on the course who'd been skipping around the car park like he'd been riding forever (well - he had pretty much - been messing around with scramblers & the like since he was about 6! lol) ended up without his certificate as well as he was a complete nightmare once they got out on the road!
I went back a week or so later for another hour in the car park, then, as the light was failing, back another afternoon to do the road section. I know that I really benefited from the extra time I took. I may well have ended up with my certificate that first day, but I wouldn't have felt like I deserved it. After another couple of sessions, it felt like I could actually trust my abilities.
I hate the way you have to pay for your dry runs. don't be too disheartened Hun. at least you know where the areas you are confident at. as for your DAS, unless you hold a CBT you will do one on the course and there is less pressure to complete it. most schools also start you off on a 125 then move you up to a 500 when your ready. But remember, at least you went and did it. No one can take that away from you. Well done for staying upright tho.
