How about:

My mum used to say (and still does on occasion)...summat like... 'I have had a sufficient quantity...any more would be an over-indulgence' (I just need to learn how to apply this to alcohol.....) I quite like 'Has anyone seen the plot.....'

I used to memorise this (by Fry from Futurama) and quote it when people would lecture me on pensions and saving for the future, etc: "It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long the grasshopper kept burying acorns for Winter while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. Then the Winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns and also he got a racecar... Is any of this getting through to you?"

Quite so, TC. My mum has to use her lifetimes savings to pay for care. If she had spent it enjoying life a bit more, and had nowt left, then the state would be paying.
