thanks for the info matt hope all the newbies realise this is not how it normally runs otherwise half of us wouldn't still be on here.
mine is running well for the first time in a while
yep its sooo fast now.
In another 10 minutes I'll send them an update saying it's ok.
Let me know how it is for you over the next 30 minutes or so.
I really need this fixing by tonight because I'm in work all day tomorrow :-(
Still really slow today Matt...hiccuping again...duplicating posts when you have not asked it to post message and also loading up is taking so long...It has took me ages today just to read and answer some of the postings...so much so...off now!
New members will not want to join if they cant speak to other members!
The senior network operations manager is on his way to Miami right now.
There's going to be some serious maintenance, hopefully this evening, which may mean that the site is DOWN totally.
I will send out a mail to everyone when I have a final announcement to make
Its just taken 2mins 10secs to load this page and i'm afraid my patience is wearing very thin now. Its not as if "slow servers" are a rarity, they're almost the norm now. It happening once in a blue moon i can cope with, but this is happening every week, if not more frequent. My interest in this site is dwindling fast
DC, it doesn't happen that often. In fact we've not really had any issues since mid-summer, except for a hacker's attempt to take us out with a DDOS attack which didn't last long
The chatroom was causing problems during the winter becuase I set the refresh rate too high - I've changed this now and it should be ok. All new applications have teething problems, and as I'm the only developer for the site these issues sometimes take a little longer to figure out.
At 99p a week nobody can complain. If you want us to hire super high-end servers then the only option is for everyone to pay £10 per month like on other websites. However this also isn't an option - because nobody will be willing to give away extra money.
Are the few hickups every so often bothering everyone so much that they'd be prepared to pay double/tripple the weekly fee???
PS: I could take the site totally down until these issues are fixed, or I could leave it running with limited availability. I think most people will prefer to have some kind of access, even if it is intermittent.
When there's planned maintenance, I always give a week's notice. Whenever there is unplanned downtime, it's rarely over 5 minutes and I always try to get a good explanation for you.
you go matt lol,i say leave the site up even if its slow,id get withdrawel sypmtoms otherwise, and dont give me a hearattack with the paying 10 quid a month,im a cheap skate
lol exactly, I want to keep the site cheap.
Problem is, only about 2% of members are subscribed now (Been the case all winter) compared with between 5 and 8% during the summer.
So basically, we've got a lot of people on the site but nobody paying to support it.
I could take all the advertising funds and hire better servers, but then we'd have no new members joining (if I stop the google advertising, mags advertising, etc).
It's a fine ballance, and right now I believe the servers are more than capable of supporting our current load.
This is just one big hickup, that's been caused by a faulty part somewhere. The company we pay for the servers are investigating still, as the hard drive replacement didn't resolve the issue.
I think he should be arriving in Miami anytime now, and will get me an update soon.
Parts do become faulty though. It is possible to hire multiple servers and do something called CLUSTERING. Then if one fails, the systems fall over to the remaining servers. However, for each server you have to increase cost of hiring the hardware, network and support/management of the kit. Plus there's more than can go wrong, and faults are hard to diagnose.
We already have seperate web, database, email servers. Currently the web server is causing the problem, hence things are slow to download to your screen (Even when the pages are generating in <0.1 seconds)
Seems faster at the moment, although the fix hasn't been implemented.
The raid array has apparently become corrupt.... which can be pretty nasty if not fixed asap.
