I've done Portsmouth - St. Malo, no berth.....slept on a bench on deck! Got into St Malo at about 7:30 am. Great for a nice coffee and pain-au-chocolate or even a cooked breakfast and of course you get a night's sleep while you're going south. You immediately notice the warmer climate of Brittany and it's a nice run to wherever you're going. I rode down to Mimizan Plage... great place!
I will be sending out a Pm shortly with payment details and will be first come first served. So suggest you sort ASAP
single riders will be put into the very spacious bunkhouse
Female riders will be put into a twin if there is 2 but if not then will need to be bunk house also. The bunk house can hold 9 and is in an almost L shape so not open like a large room. There will also be by looks of it only a few in it if the smaller rooms have couples in them.
couples will get first dibs on the 2 twins or the last double which means only be 5 at most in bunk house
Bunk house has it's own beer fridge for you and storage areas for your gear. There are several toilets and showers and the place is spotless as cleaned daily.
I have been and the place is well deserved the best biker stop in France. We will also have the place completely to ourselves so will only be this group there
Great trip MadScots, sorry I cannot come with you on this one as already committed to a ride to Scandinavia around the same time. You asked for thoughts on crossing, well..... coming down from the northwest my usual plan is to ride down during the day catch a train about 1600/1700 then stop in a 'premiere classe' in either Boulogne if heading south or dunkirk if going north. Get a good nights sleep and then have a full day starting fresh in the morning. Coming home I do the reverse e.g. night stop in boulogne/dunkirk then a train about 0830 giving me the whole day to get back up here. Costs are similar about 38 euros for the hotel and 57 euros return for the train. Hope that is helpful. Have a good trip ride safely I hope to join you another time. Cheers Robin [p.s forgot to mention the reason for the train is that I suffer from sea sickness !!!!!]
Right guys Pm sent to those who have put names down 18 of you
I have been looking at ferries and what i thought to do for money/time
Friday 28th 17:25 Dover to Calais Calais overnight (£30+ a room for 2) Then look at a mid stop somewhere on way down Saturday Sunday 30th arrive at bikers rest
The reason for this is it is 463 miles from Calais to bikers rest so thought of splitting it up.
For folks who want they can meet us down there also so your more than welcome to make own way if that suits you better The trip is about touring around south of France and worth every mile.
The overnight ferries I felt were over expensive and rather have a night sitting in bar chilling personally.
Madscots, all sounds good to me and we still get to Biker rest on Sunday Will we book Calais when over there or have you got a Travel Lodge or similar in mind??
Not be long now by looks of it places will be full
I was looking at maybe a later ferry across than planned for me and was thinking maybe could catch you guys in Calais ? I won't get out of Edinburgh to about 10 so can't see me in Calais before 9 or 10.
I'm really keen on Friday night crossing as can then do some back roads down to second stop Saturday night then only have a small run on Sunday to bikers rest. It also means we keep off toll roads and see bit more of France ?
My main issue with the toll roads is if they are not manned you have to pay more (unless i missed how you pay for a bike). The fuel on these routes are a complete rip of as is 20-30 euros more a litre so over 400+ miles is a lot.
I also think a nice easy run down is best way to start holidays ? That doesn't mean to say others cannot go down in one stop on a Sunday if they wish themselves.
