squares means that you're indeed using IE9 or lower, which is bad basically. IE is a very bad browser and doesn't behave correctly. It's like me saying (as a developer) that text should = red and all browsers display text as red except for IE (which displays blue or something).
Try pressing "New Message" in the conversations list (rather than picking an existing conversation). Try that with both browsers and notice the difference. What you see in IE is just the best I could come up with to work around all the flaws of IE.
It's sad because I used to be very pro-IE, really promoting IE with everyone. But not anymore :-(
For those complaining they can't see old messages... I really don't know what the problem is. The site shows you your old messages perfectly fine - you just need to click on the person's name on the left hand side who the conversation was with.
Only entire conversations can be deleted at the moment, not individual messages. That will change asap.
Also, there will soon be an ability to only show unread/updated conversations
I am liking the new style messages, I can track a conversation much more easily and now there is a delete button it is making things much better, nice one.
As the one who started this thread with a suggestion (not a complaint!), not knowing Matt was already working on something similar, I have to say I'm a little dismayed at the reactions of the few naysayers and doom mongers here!
The new system is just like the way your mobile phone handles and displays text messages and What'sApp. It's more logical and intuitive. Keep up the good work Matt!
If anyone is still using IE9 its easy and free to upgrade, this is 2014! Or swap to Firefox, much better for most things I find?
Look for the little green ticks at the bottom left of each message, one tick means sent, two ticks means read by the addressee - simples!
Matt - for your next challenge, can we atteach 1 or more .jpg files to a PM to allow members to exchange pics without having to publish on their profile?

OOh! Monday morning challenges ....... nothing like cheering the boss up when he logs on Richard!
Like others here, I like the new system too, much easier to converse with people, and remember what the discussion is.......... well, it is for my foggy memory anyhoo!
Just been on the messages .. startled at first, shouldn't take too much 'working out' most times change is for the good and I don't envisage Matt do anything to the detriment of the site .. I'm all for it ..
HavFun - I really need to understand why some people find it 'hard work'. How much simpler can I make it? There's a list of people's names and when you click a name you get to see all the messages to/from that person. Other than mind-controls and crystal balls I cannot make the site simpler - it's necessary for you to select what you want to view, and the only options are the people's names who you have chatted with.
Thanks for all the positive messages folks (both via the forums and direct PMs). The response has been very positive with a few exceptions (people who I think just can't understand that clicking on a person's name on the left opens up the old messages - not sure how much more simple i can make it! Many saying they can't "FIND" their old messages).
Hmmm that's a real challenge there about the photos! My "to do" list is now in this order...
1) Switch between "unread" and "all" conversations option 2) Button to "block" someone 3) Some basic smileys (half the people responding to me have thanked me for removing them, the other half are begging to have them back) 4) Photo uploads (this is a much more complex request)
I think part of the issue is that some people, like me, don't use Facebook or have wizzy mobile phones, so are not used to the layout.
When you are used to something its easier to stick with it and not have it fiddled with. Like all "improvements" or "upgrades" sometimes you like the changes sometimes you don't. I can't stand the new improved quorn sausages, but there are a lot of people that do.
Matt, I am getting used to the new way. It still seems odd, but I admit to being a technophobe who spends £10 every six months on an old pay as you go phone!
Rownablossom, I am glad to hear that you don't like the new ''improved'' quorn sausages, I have to tell you I didn't like the old unimproved quorn sausages so I wont be trying the new ones either! lol
Cheers Matt yes I see your point about the IE9 which is why I NEVER use it ..... Im a Chrome and Firefox (and whatever other browser I feel like using too) kinda gal
Love this new system of messages its dead easy to use....
P.S. @ 666 I LOVE Quorn sossies
i take it that its some form of a coppy of face book by the way peeps are talking as i dont do face book i gess its a book with a face on it but as with every thing we have to live with it unless mat can run both versions at same time and we can use whichh we are comfortable with
havfun, it really is a more simplified way to organise your PM's, you can see exactly what you have said to anyone by simply clicking on that members name, the whole history of previous conversations is revealed without having to scroll through countless pages of mixed sequential messages. if that isnt making life easier I don't know what will.
