I get you on that Matt, but this is a website not a popularity contest for one, and secondly if you dont post much or go in chat rooms, you dont get alot of karma, who is to know who is ticking off whom! It could be seen that if you have a low karma you are not a popular person and therefore other people will not talk to you. I realise that is taking it to the extreme, but can you see my point?
I usually say something on these every day and am in the chatroom nearly every night, my karma is low! so it could appear that i am not popular (not that i care) but for those that might it could sway them away from the site.
(given up running, hopping on tram to Bury now-- Shell..... )
I agree FG , it could put people off joining ,
What if someone has a relationship with someone & it goes nasty ... what if you tick off one person ... & they start saying things so 20 others vote against you ....
or to the other side ...
you do something for one & they big you up so 20 others vote for you?
Something that relies on someones personal opinion will not be able to show what someone deserves or doesnt, as a personal opinion is not objective & most times very bias one way or another
**runs to catch up with FG ... ok hobbles to catch up **
aw FG i likes u hunny.......in a totally girly none sexual kinda way
phew need to sit down, bein girly is bad for my health, feelin all dizzy n weak.....
For what it's worth, IMHO, I think the karma, or any other popularity, rating should be done away with. It's just causing confusion and misunderstanding; and I deffo don't see the point in the pending voting system, just goina cause annoyance and cliquey-ness. Much the same as the nod that used to be a wink.
Well said Kwak and feistygirl! This is a social and not a competition site. Anything that degenerates into a popularity competition is bound to be divisive and this karma business is not only becoming divisive but so complex that no one really understands it. In fact, it seems to have taken on a life of its own. I suggested some time ago' and feistygirl has alluded to it since, that it could have a negative effect on posting since some people with low karma will feel embarrassed to jump in. It could also encourage a lot of spurious posts to boost individuals' karma ratings. This has always been a friendly site in which intelligent debate can take place and friends made. This is why I continue to post here. If we start voting on members' perceived popularity many of these positive aspects could go to the wall and, as Kwak has suggested, lead to cliques being formed. Instead, we should concentrate on what this site does best - giving a warm welcome to new members and friendly, constructive discussion on forums and the chat room for all.
I don't even understand the need to understand it. It's just a blue bar under your photo.
Why does anyone feel the need to understand how it's calculated or what they need to do to make their blue bar grow? It's just there.
From other sites I've been on which include a karma rating, it's not been a popularity contest, nor has it put off newbies posting or whatever... it's had quite the opposite effect... a newbie knows if they approach one of the bods with a high karma rating, they're likely to be very active on the site and usually pretty helpful to the noobs.
You only get to "vote" up or down once on another member, so it's hardly likely to have any massive effect... there are what, 20,000 members or something on here?
It's not like other forums where you can continue to vote up or down once an hour or something. That's always most amusing to come back after a week's holiday to find that your karma count is -573
But hey, at least it's generated a lot more site activity. Fast moving threads on forums help generate interest from newbies and may even persuade a few of 'em to part with their pennies and go for full membership, instead of nodding their heads off at all and sundry until some kind soul PMs them
