It'd have to be a BIG one to warrant £80 on the ferry !! No I'll be here getting ready for you all, Just sounds like you're all going to have a blast before you get here x
We cant make the dates Mickey has organised for this one, so we're off for the may bank holiday.
We went last summer and had an amazing time, and after telling a few mates about it, we now have 7 people on 5 bikes for this year.
As far as ferries go, we went Poole to Cherbourg on the fastcat, which is only 2 1/2 hour trip, giving more riding time the other side. The route takes you past(with a slight detour) Mont St Michel, the lovely town of Dinan (great for a lunch stop), and some other great roads on the way.
We came back Roscof to Plymouth, which was easier for us to get to for the early ferry as we were pushed for time that trip, but a horrible long motorway ride this end.
The fastcat is by far our preffered crossing, as you spend less time at sea, and more on the bike, it was also cheaper!!
This time we are going Portsmouth to Cherbourg return, and with mickeys discount code it worked out at £70.40 return for bike+1.
I havent checked ferry prices for the dates you lot are going, and understand prices can swing it, but I would definately go for the fastcat. Booking it this early, you should be ok for space.
Whichever way you get there, you will have a Great time!!
Slidy, we have already looked into the best route and we are all going Portsmouth to Le Harve on the over nighter. Sailing times and cost all come in to it... Poole my be quicker but sailing times are no good
Ok Deb, glad you're all sorted. Just thought I'd let you know how we found it.
I agree with the sailing times, we will be leaving home around 4.30 in the morning to make it for the 9am crossing. The good thing is, no traffic on the roads on the way down, and a quick snooze on the ferry will see us right for a good afternoon ride to the Gite where there will be chilled breton cidre waiting for us . . . hopefully!!!
Appreciate what you are saying Slidy, I thought the Fastcat was going to be the best route, but in the end for me it came down to sailing times. I have to get down from Manchester, and pick someone else up on the Friday in Bedford, so the only sailing we would have made left us needing overnight accomdation, or a late night drive to the gite. The ones we have booked get us in to Le Havre with the whole of the day to get to the gite. Ended up better all round. Being cheaper was a bonus.
