very sensible advice indeed Geoff! if i may ask ..what happened to using one's hazard lights when in a situation that requires progress , if a biker or motorist approaches me from the back and briefly flashes main beam or hazards i give reasonable way to them ..no questions asked , there are too many reasons why a road user might be in a hurry .
Not jumping on any band wagon Ian.... just stating facts... someone "confronting" someone else at the next available junction is generally perceived as an aggressive action. Not stating that YOU do "road rage", just stating that "confrontation" will POTENTIALLY escalate the situation.
Perhaps best not to drive on the continent if a flash of the lights winds you up. They're constantly at it... & leaning on their horns!
I completely agree with Cata and WB and they've put it far better than I ever could.
How many times on a near empty motorway do you see someone sat in the middle lane....WHY? Perhaps they think, well they can go round me so what's the problem? The problem is it's a lazy, sloppy and inconsiderate *I'm alright Jack* driving style and when this transfers to the road when busier, the result is additional needless congestion.
I am a very patient driver/rider....there is no need for aggression of any form...
I do find it annoying when people hog lanes...but I safely maneouvre myself round them thus avoiding any potential danger...
Flashing...errrm....
No seriously I only flash someone as a warning (as per Highway Code) normally because someone is driving down the road with no lights on...etc again to avoid potential danger...I never ever trust someone flashing me out of a junction..I do my own observations and make my own judgment as to whether it is safe or not to exit that junction...common sense...but unfortunately as many have demonstrated before...there seem to be a lot of numpty motorists who lack that illustre quality!
From Highway Code:
90. Flashing Headlights. Only flash your headlights to let other road users know that you are there. Do not flash your headlights in an attempt to intimidate other road users.
91. If another driver flashes his headlights never assume that it is a signal to go. Use your own judgement and proceed carefully.
Advanced driving instruction also advocates the use of flashing the headlights in the appropriate circumstances.
If you are intimidated by tailgaters, then safespeed.org.uk has some good advice on how to deal with them.
I am off now to deal with all those 'cocks' who think it is cool to flash their little yellow lights at me!!!
exc - we are cool!
I mean those smug gits in their cars/lorries/buses/on their bikes that insist on flashing those little yellow lights when they are changing direction. It is as if they are mocking me....
Well, I flashed every single vehicle this morning and they all moved over very politely, many with a little wave as though to apologise for being in my way.
Brilliant!
Apart from one guy who held me up for nearly four seconds and then "confronted" me about my flashing. But I stabbed him as soon as he got out of his car so he didn't delay me by much.
End result; Pontefract to Leeds by A roads in only fifteen minutes!
Ok, I didn't flash everyone. Or indeed stab anyone. Instead I just rode really, really fast, shouting profanities, shaking my fist and giving the bird to everyone who got in my way.
Ok, I'm lying again, I never shook fist, offered bird or anything. But I did ride really, really fast and it was ace.
I did however flash one driver on a dual carriageway on the way into Leeds from Garforth. And, even though I flashed him from quite a way back, he still moved over with plenty of time and did indeed offer a little wave to apologise for hogging the lane even though I never needed to slow down at all thanks to the guy's politeness.
Needless to say, I offered a little wave back as I went past to say ta.
I therefore rest my case. And I don't think I'm a cock!

As a field engineer, a good part of my day is spent driving round the three motorways that surround brum. They are never quite to the point that you have three clear lanes.
If i am in the outside lane in a line of traffic gong faster than the traffic on the inside lane whatever that speed might be. I dont expect to move out of the way of some self important Knob who thinks we all should get out of his way cus he wants to go faster. As for using the middle lane. The only time i stay in the middle lane is passing juctions regardless of wether anyone is there in case said knob is coming down the on ramp.
In a lot of countries it's legal to overtake on the left or right. the middle lane is concidered safest lane so don't assume their all being lasy. Could be argued that getting wound up cus you've gotta move your steering wheel 3 degrees or lean over a bit is just as lasy.
It's interesting that we feel that it's ok to break the law with excessive speed but are moaning about peeple breaking other parts of the law simply becouse it is slowing you down.
Nothing to do with breaking or being within the law Blue. This stemmed purely from the point that some drivers could be more courteous and move over to let a faster moving vehicle past if it is safe for them to do so.
I too have found many posts in this recent spat interesting.
I have found it interesting that people suggest that it's better to hold someone up, who is quite possibly in a genuine hurry for some reason and to then even "confront" them about it at the first available opportunity!
I also find it interesting that simply because someone asks you (presuming they have simply offered a single, polite flash) to move over, that many consider them to be "cocks" or "self important knobs".
It is clear that many people who have posted are of the "let them wait" brigade who will force the approaching vehicle to slow down and perhaps even then make them wait far longer than is reasonably necessary.
Let us all hope that none of these incidents involve someone who is in a rush because they have genuine cause. Perhaps because they are rushing a friend or relative to hospital?
Food for thought I'd say.
Thats what i was getting at Geoff , it could be for one of the reasons you stated or a doctor on call whatever ,i will give way if its safe to move at the time...only my point of view though.

Anyone seen by a copper on the motorway lets say trying to expadite there way through heavy traffic is going to get pulled wether they are this mythical doctor without a green light or someone who's left his passport at home. There is no justification for breaking the speed limit. Unless there is autherisation to do so. All the copper will see is a unautherised plain vehicle traveling at speed. Becouse you want to get there quickly the expectation shouldn't be that everyone should let you pass rather to be gratefull when someone does.
I am fed up of people on BM looking at your profile or nodding..you then click on to their profile to find it has been disabled or is no longer available..why do people lurk like that?????
