I was talking to someone the other day that told me that the only salt mine in the country is in Cheshire & that they supply all the rest of the country & that at the moment they are only just able to keep up with demand.
Each council has only so much storage space to stockpile the salt & they are quickly running out due to the prolonged wintery conditions & the stockpile that the saltmine has is now depleted (cos they've only just got so much space to store it aswell)
The problem is that we haven't had a winter such as this for god knows how long - usually when it hits, it's gone again in a few days & it's not usually ALL of the country that gets it at the same time. Hence the councils are having to concentrate on major routes - roads to hospitals etc rather than the side roads they would usually have done if they had any spare salt left.
When I was young we all went out and cleared the pavements from our house and we all used to sort out the old people paths in the street because it was the right thing to do.....as for gritters they wont put the plough down on the rubber pads to the roads as apparently it wears out the rubber pads...errr thats what the pads are for....to stop the steel plough wearing out the road, the pads cost money?????
I doubt it's as simple as not enough storage HFG it's a lack of budgeting towards doing this properly! Have you all noticed over the past few years those Yello salt binns that were all around the estates and other places dissapearing?
Lets see if i can help here....the councils are not able to spend money on none vital areas (yes i know) such as salt bins and other items when there is no need for them until 1, there's accident 2, there is repeated requests or 3,a complaint or4, health and safety or 5, it falls into another legislation that requires them to implement necessary action.
Lay-mans terms, they don't have enough money for the Government to run proper services so they don't spend.
Because of Labour Government cut backs in council budgets (The money is put into other services such as NHS, Education,Police etc) most council boroughs have had to sell land and close down amenities (Primary schools, Community halls,Toilets,Etc) and reduce the fleets of machines to multi bodied trucks and sell storage areas for salt and other equipment they once had. Other polices of only looking after main routes for road sweeping, gully emptying and gritting as a priority unfortunately leave country lanes and housing estates left until there are complaints about road surfaces and gullies blocked or snow and that's a fact.
Yet Euro -parliament has policy of road safety measures it wants the UK to follow, and this government spends a large amount of money on white lining programs for cyclist and filter lanes and rumble strips and speed ramps and road signs and on and on. This money has to be spent every year and is, this is a massive waste and most times is a danger to motorcyclist.
My rant is 40 years ago we had all the right services available for whatever the situation was and common sense was use in all areas and it worked........but now its do this to a budget do that, cut back here and there put the pressure on joe bloggs to salt up and shift his or her own snow pile, and do nothing until someone complains. If that's what they want for gods sake peeps complain every fu*kin day until it's sorted because it's your tax money that's being wasted.
I agree totally the difference being even 20 - 30 years ago was that there was less chiefs and more indians and you didn't need 3 assesors to tell you a job needs done, it was reported and a wagon came out and fixed it.....I remember the plough drivers taking the ploughs home and using there judgement to go out over the bad periods.....too much on PC stuff being spent and on highly paid idiots in charge of everything and actually doing nothing ...
Why is it that bosses never lead by example these days .................... yes we have snow and yes some people have a harder job to get to work then others ie depends were they live etc.
Our big boss, has not come into work today as he says he is snowed in, but has decree'd that if others have not come in 'due to bad weather conditions' they will have it deducted from there annual leave and have to book it as holiday !!!!
Greed, power and control thats all there is....they want you to do as they say because they then have control over you with that fear of im going to lose my job....instead of being friendly and easy going and trying to build respect they put over educated kids in to do the sh*ty stuff of pushing people around. I have had that problem many times..( Ive got a degree in this and studied that) ...with people who have no experience or understanding of anything and try to re-invent the wheel with new ideas that are no better than what we had before and it usually cost someone there job.
On a different but similar thing ...bad snow for the south of England they don't have the man power to cope with the disruption so they have pulled this labour pr stunt over Gorden Brown to try and deflect our concerns.
Why do men think they have a god given right to preach to you about stuff? One in particular can go and kiss my entire a**e. Game over. <insert a bucket load of expletives here>
Should have stuck with my first impression Ian...I'm usually right...and i was...he's a k**b, full of his own self importance
I asked for his help and was given his opinion on my life....the words off fook (rearrange) were heard loudly and forcefully coming from my mouth
