Will a Z1000J engine fit in a Z550 ltd frame?

Does anyone happen to know whether the Z1000J engine will fit straight into a Z550 LTD frame?

My Z1000 K1 frame has rotted where the side stand is welded on and split several inches along the length. There's a 550 frame going for not much money but I want a straight swap. Not too worried about everything else - I can make that fit.

any engine will fit into any frame if you have a hacksaw and welding gear.....

There was a split second, before I clicked on the link, that I thought you had something helpful to say.

Something along the lines of 'possibly - they share the same crankcases just different size bore. '

My cousin had a z650 with a z900 engine in a few years back, that went in with no cutting lumps out of the frame, just a couple of mounts re-positioned.My old GS1000 had a 16v GSX1100 Katana lump in it,it fitted fine but you couldn't get to the oil filter without removing the exhaust first, dead handy that!

sorry about that,Strangly, to get you excited............. personal experience has diktated the answer maybe if you start by measuring the distance between bottom crankcase mountings first to see if they will sit in the cradle.... best of luck mate...

Looking at pictures of both bikes they seem to be quite tight in their original frames and already have small engine mounts. the difference in bore sizes and probably crank means larger cases on z1000 also pipes go either side of front frame rails wil be larger bore on z1000 so may not fit. certainly not a straight swap.

Can't answer the original question, but Sprint900, you're not alone. I had an XJ650 years back that the previous owner had fitted with a four into one exhaust, neatly blocking access to the oil filter.
To make matters worse, the XJ650 exhaust studs were only 6mm, and being a universal Japanese motorcycle (apart from the shaft drive) they were coated with road crud.
Result was that half the little sods sheared off when I went to take off the downpipes. Most expensive oil change I've ever done!

Biggest pain was getting pipes off before draining oil,I always get the engine warm before changing oil, warm oil equals hot exhausts!
My Triumph is utter luxury to work on in comparison (except the middle spark plug....)

the answer is no it will not fit right in as the engine mounts arent right...apparently. Ring zed power in leigh, lancs they can prob get you a new frame for next to nowt.

Thats right it definately is'nt a straight swap, the crankcases are much bigger on the 1000 & the engine is much taller & the carbs most likely would'nt fit in the space either,it's more likely to fit an a z/gpz 750/1100 frame..or get busy with the grinder, pipe bender & welder.

and if you did get it to fit the power output would bounce the frame all over the road....

The engine wont fit. Its a lot larger than the 550. You will need to alter the frame to shoe horn it in.

i know emzed but you know as well as i the problems you have once you start swapping frames and engines and there's plenty of z1000 frames around so why not take the easy option

Aye you're quite right there Bill A real "can o worms" when you start to "mix n match" There has to be a VERY good reason to go down that particular alleyway I can't say that I could EVER find a reason for the above mentioned swap But there's nowt so queer as folk So each to their own and suffer the consequences
