That is the question? Does it depend on age? Or your style? Or is one better than the other?

Been to a few mag rallys and there are not as good as folk think. Very poor quality food and drink over priced entry, so so bands and the comedy is, Laugh everybody I said "fuck".
BMF ? I dont have a clue what they are doing they offer stuff with your membership like a free 1st aid course that costs more than the membership fee.

The image of the BMF is a bit more sedate, but they've both had bitter internal politics which have led to several grass-roots departures. Cataraptor is the man to ask.

Simon asked the question BMF or MAG? I presume you're concerned with their riders rights campaigning rather than discounts or socialising. To answer that, I was a volunteer with the BMF from 1985, worked as their paid lobbyist from 1992 until 2007 and remained a member until 2010. I often worked with MAG's lobbyists during that period and joined MAG as an ordinary member in 2011 deciding not to renew when my membership expired in 2014.

Prior to 2006, my answer to the question would have been either or both; between 2006 and 2013 it would be MAG; now it's neither. The BMF went into decline from some poor decision making while I was still working for them and my successor as their lobbyist ( who did a sterling job) has also left their employment and now lobbies for the MCI (motorcycle industry). There is a paid lobbyist in post but I am not aware of how effective he is. The BMF also lost its shows which were its main source of income so it has all but faded away. MAG, more recently had internal ructions mainly over the treatment of its lobbying staff and as a result, most of its local and regional groups (where MAG had most of its strength) have folded. MAG now employs two lobbyists but its effectiveness has seriously declined. Some of the former local MAG groups have now become Riders Action Groups - RAGs and are lobbying on their own. MCI while having an agenda to sell bikes does bear in mind riders with much of its lobbying.

So, as Wills has said, both organisations have suffered problems through internal politics which, in my opinion, has made them ineffective as representatives of riders' rights. My suggestion for anyone wanting to get involved is to check out the local RAGs in your area and join them.
