To anybody who will be riding the A66 Dalwhinnie to Spean Bridge in the next couple of days:
Be aware that halfway down one of the long straights by the side of the loch, there is an unmarked drop of a couple of inches onto an unprepared surface which is totally unsuitable for motorcycles. It is navigable at about 20 mph but you will be unable to brake or steer and your bars will be shaking. There are no speed restrictions and no ramp signs.
It is only by pure luck that we were going about 40mph when we hit it as this is a fast stretch of road. Our lead rider, with over 40 years of experience was even taken by surprise and had a VERY close moment.
I have notified the police but please, please be careful...
Ah great so next time im in the pub not only can I expect the local tout to be palming me Porn DVD's,Crooky designer goods and bling, I can now expect half a mile of blacktop for £30..........
Mind you , be handy for the driveway.
And Julie, RE the diversion....Ok I'll do it but your ontop and provide the wotsits!
That is of course the A86, not the A66...
*cough*
... and if some gap toothed gypsies try to sell you thin strips of tarmac with white bikes painted on them be very careful - I have heard they are cyclepaths....
*hangs head in shame*.......
(I blame Autoroute - they should use clearer fonts.... erm, and I was tired.... and I still had smoke in my eyes from rescuing some children from a burning orphanage... and... and...)
am glad you clarified that TC - I was getting concerned that the poor old A66 had managed to get itself lost! - I mean I know it's an OLD road (Roman times) but I thought it had managed to not go down the route of senility just yet!
Oh lawd... I have brought shame upon myself and my family...
*unsheaths samurai sword*
*cuts toenails*
*shrugs shoulders and wanders off whistling*
Apologies again to all confused - was trying to get the warning out there a.s.a.p. and misread Autoroute in my haste. Only realised this morning when I went to check that there had been no accidents on it....
I'm secretly a multi millionaire playboy!...I only live in an ex council house with me aging Mam and ride a 24 year old bike to keep the tax man off me back!
Tooooo Laaaate! was on A86 a couple of days ago. Nearly got caught out too. Ramp signs there, they usually only do one side of road at a time. Bit like being on railway track.Still survived it . bit hairy to say the least but had nice run to skye and remembered about it on the way back!
Glad you survived it, Biffo!!
We were going to do Skye that day too but the weather wasn't on our side so we turned left at Spean Bridge and rode through Glencoe instead - not a bad alternative...
Will hopefully make Skye in the next few weeks.
